Welcome to the Canadian version of the Senior Home Safety Specialist® certification offered by Age Safe America, LLC since 2017. This latest version includes updates compiled by Live Easy Inc., in collaboration with Canadian experts in the field of senior home safety and accessibility. The evidence-based course material offered here provides best practices for a holistic look at senior safety. From fall prevention and home mods, to fire safety, communication, crime prevention, and an in-depth evaluation of the home environment, this course will provide a solid foundation and understanding of the importance of fall risk hazard identification and mitigation and many other topics.
The concerns about the safety of our older adult citizens is universal in nature. Falls among older adults are a public health concern worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, about a third of older adults fall each year. Globally, the percentage ranges from 32% to 42% for those 70 years or older. Consequently, we have trained professionals throughout North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
in Canada, approximately one-third of adults age 65 years or older fall in their home each year, resulting in injury, increase caregiver demands, long-term disability and premature loss of independence. Falls account for 85% of seniors’ injury-related hospitalizations, making this the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations and injury deaths among people aged 65 or older. The average Canadian senior had to stay in hospital 10 days longer for falls than for any other cause. Falls are associated with over 1/3 of admissions to long-term care facilities after being released from the hospital. Falls and fall-related injuries among older adults are preventable.
The cost of treating fall-related injuries is high. Apart from personal suffering, loss of independence, and lower quality of life, the costs of seniors’ injuries to the Canadian health system are enormous – approximately $5.6 billion annually is spent on direct health care costs. As the baby boom cohort ages, by 2040 older adults are projected to make up close to one-fourth of Canada’s population. The pace of growth of the group aged 85 or older is expected to be particularly steep. Future prevention efforts may target those most at risk: women, those aged 80 or older, and older people who live alone or have low income. Multi-faceted prevention strategies, (including comprehensive home safety assessments), will be important to reduce the prevalence of fall-related injuries at home, and deaths in Canada’s aging population.

This comprehensive 5-hour, self-paced, online course offers the only certificate of its kind to individuals within the senior services industry. Upon successfully completing the entire course, you will receive an attractive certificate along with a digital copy of the Senior Home Safety Specialist® emblem for use on your social sites and marketing materials.

The Public Health Agency of Canada released a comprehensive report in 2022 presenting national-level health statistics on falls among adults aged 65 years and older using a variety of health data sources. This data blog builds on this report in that it provides the most recent national-level statistics on fall-related deaths, hospitalizations, and emergency department (ED) visits among older adults in Canada. Information on factors contributing to falls is also provided to help inform prevention efforts. Take action!
