How to Grow an Aging in Place Advisor Business

How to Grow an Aging in Place Advisor Business

Even before the pandemic, trends in aging pointed to the need for aging in place solutions. By the year 2030, all Baby Boomers will be over the age of 65. The number of seniors is estimated to nearly double from 52 million in 2018 to 95 million in 2060. The U.S. Census Bureau predicts that by 2034, for the first time in the country’s history, adults ages 65 and older will outnumber children under the age of 18. In addition, over the past decade, studies have shown that most adults over the age of 50 prefer to stay in their homes as they age. There’s also the issue of cost: According to Genworth Financials’ annual cost of long term care report; assisted living facilities charge around $4500.00 per month on a national average, and as high as $9000.00 per month in many US markets, putting them out of reach for many seniors.
Most older adults want to “age in place”, meaning to keep living in their current homes for as long as possible; but many haven’t taken the steps to help them do so. From home safety and accessibility, to social support, community services and paid in-home help. The findings from the National Poll on Healthy Aging suggest many people in their 50s, 60s and 70s need to do more to modify their homes or plan for services they may need if they want to avoid or delay needing to move.

All this points to an unprecedented market for helping families and older adults plan ahead to successfully age in place.
Yes, the pandemic changed everything, and made the desire to age in one’s own home even stronger for millions of older Americans and their families. The fallout has further exposed the many advantages and urgency to prepare now in order to age in place successfully. Recent collaborations with major retailers, strategic moves by industry stakeholders, and a new tax credit legislation introduced in Congress, all signal the burgeoning Aging-in-Place (AIP) industry is about to explode.

One of the most significant threats to our seniors successfully aging in place is falls. Accidental falls among the elderly have become epidemic in America and many in the health community view senior home safety as a significant health concern. Every 11 seconds an older adult is treated in the emergency room for a fall; and every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from a fall.

Today, many active seniors find it is far more cost-efficient to make home improvements to accommodate the effects of aging rather than seek out a facility that meets all their unique needs. According to NAHB, moving to a typical assisted living facility can cost upwards of $60,000 per year each year while the cost to widen a bathroom door, put in safety bars and a roll-in shower should typically cost closer to the vicinity of $8000-$10,000 — which is a one-time expense instead of a yearly drain on a homeowner’s finances. Even simple home modifications like lighting and non-slip surfaces can provide the stability needed to age confidently at home.

Aging-in-place remodeling projects that saw the largest increases over the past five years were additional lighting (also known as “task lighting”), showers without curbs, bath/shower grab bars, non-slip floors and widened doorways. The most popular exterior improvements include ramps or “zero step” entrances, package shelves near front doors, handrails installed at existing steps and porch or front door sidelights.
