There’s a good chance you are at a point in your life that you are downsizing—or at least thinking about it. If so, you most certainly will have a considerable number of things to donate and sell. The selling part is relatively easy. You either have a yard sale or an auction. When it comes to donating a portion of the money from your sale, however, you want to make sure they go where they will do the most good.
One organization you might want to consider is the RED CROSS. March is Red Cross Awareness Month, so making a donation during the month of March to a non-profit that has been around for centuries, is a wonderful way to express your appreciation and respect for all they do. The Red Cross has been sending aid and assistance to people around the world for over 140 years. Some of the things they do includes:
- Providing emergency assistance to people affected by natural disasters, house fires, and other such emergencies.
- Working in conjunction with the military to help family members get home in times of crisis (death of a loved one, for example).
- Providing ‘daddy’ or ‘mommy’ dolls to children of military men and women deployed overseas.
- Serving as the primary source and resource for blood donation.
- Teaching lifesaving courses, i.e., first aid, lifeguard training, and home safety.
- Teaching healthcare professional courses (CNA and AED).
- Teaching babysitting courses.
- Teaching workplace safety.
- Teaching workplace safety, disaster preparedness, and emergency preparedness.
- Training volunteers to serve effectively and professionally.
As you read through the list of services the Red Cross provides, you probably aren’t interested in babysitting classes, becoming a certified lifeguard, or becoming a licensed CAN. BUT…
But volunteering to provide support to military families, volunteering at a blood bank, and learning what YOU need to do in case of natural disasters or emergencies has merit and value to you and countless others. And what about learning how you can use YOUR talents and work-related skills to serve with the Red Cross? At this stage in your life, if you have the capability to do for others, why not do for others with the Red Cross?
