I feel relatively certain that anyone who reads this article knows who I am referring to when I say the GREATEST GENERATION, and what these people did to earn this distinction. We need to acknowledge, however, that with each passing day there are fewer and fewer of them still living among us. Because this is true, telling younger people to remember what these men and women did and sacrificed for us is senseless. They can’t remember. I wasn’t even there so that I could have these memories. It was twenty years before my time. So how can those even younger than me remember? They can’t. But what they can do, is learn.
Those of us (young and oldish) can learn to appreciate and respect why the Greatest Generation is truly great. We can learn to appreciate and respect the fact that it is because of them…because of some of YOU, that we are still able to celebrate Independence Day. For that I want to say, on behalf of everyone who is living under the umbrella of your protection, “THANK YOU FOR OUR INDEPENDENCE.”.
Thank you for putting duty to God and country before your desire to stay home with your family.
Thank you for giving up or putting off a college education (which was rare back in those days) to make it the norm for those who came after you.
Thank you for persevering through unthinkable atrocities to free those who lived across the globe from evil.
Thank you for putting your lives on the line for everyone then, now, and in the years to come.
Thank you for honoring the flag and all it stands for, for respecting authority, for believing in the cause of justice, freedom, and liberty.
AND…
Thank you, wives, mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, sweethearts, grandparents, and friends, for sharing your loved ones with the world in such a selfless manner.
Thank you, wives, mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, sweethearts, grandparents, and friends, for bravely, graciously, selflessly, and sacrificially bearing the title of Gold Star Family. Thank you for giving up one you loved so dearly so that others could go on living.
Thank you, Greatest Generation, for living honorably and with integrity and strength, and without resentment. And may we never fail to respect and comprehend that your suffering is the reason for our independence.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA!
