6 Ways to Support Seniors Aging in Community
Seniors face an array of challenges as they contend with the many challenges of aging. These challenges may make assisted living or nursing homes seem necessary, but studies show that 77% of adults over the age of 50 want to age at home. This has given rise to a new model: the idea of aging in community.
1. Establish a Village of Resources
Aging in community refers to circumstances in which seniors can age at home while receiving necessary support and care from community members. One example of this idea is the village-to-village model. Establishing a “village” of resources for seniors allows them to age at home while all necessary resources are within close proximity.
2. Downsize to a Smaller Home or Condo
Some seniors who are considering moving in order to age in community will likely face the prospect of downsizing. Before purchasing a home in a new community, these seniors should research home prices in the area. There are various search tools they can use to quickly sort through options, including finding those with accessibility features.
3. Make Necessary Home Modifications
If a senior’s home is already located in a thriving community, it may make the most sense to stay put. Their home may not be suited to aging, though, if it includes stairs and other senior-unfriendly features. Investing in home modifications can make their home safer and allow them to age in community. It’s also worth investing in a warranty to provide some extra safety and peace of mind in regards to home systems and appliances. When selecting a home warranty company, there are plenty of options, so it pays to do a little research.
4. Arrange a Roommate Living Situation
Some seniors who age in community opt for alternative living arrangements. Getting a roommate, for example, can be more affordable — and it can also offer companionship that’s beneficial to both parties.
5. Invest in Social Activities and Stimulation
Access to social activities and stimulation is a major component of aging in community. Too often, seniors become isolated as they get older, and this can contribute to mental health problems such as depression. Seniors should have access to friends and family who regularly keep them socially engaged.
6. Ensure Seniors Have Access to Health Care
One of the biggest concerns facing seniors who age in community is the potential delay in receiving medical services. Seniors who have existing health problems — especially serious ailments — may feel safer in an environment with constant medical attention. Seniors who age in community can benefit from nearby health care resources.
Empowering Seniors to Age With Respect
Seniors deserve the respect and support of their community as they get older. For those who don’t want to move into a facility or live with family members, establishing a village-like community can provide a viable alternative. Seniors who age in community should hire a plumber for any home renovation needs and invest in a home with a thriving community.
