Empowering Independence: Celebrating Older Americans Month
Every May, we come together to honor Older Americans Month (OAM), recognizing the invaluable contributions of our senior citizens. As home safety experts, we are passionate about ensuring that older adults can age gracefully and independently in their own homes. Let’s look at these themes of independence, values and the challenges faced by older Americans.
Independence is more than just physical autonomy; it encompasses emotional well-being, social connections and the ability to make choices. As we age, maintaining independence becomes crucial. Here are some ways that we can empower older adults:
First – home modifications that can be the simple adjustments like grab bars, non-slip flooring and adequate lighting. At Age Safe America, we have been saying grab bars are the new seat belts since 2017 and more people across industries are echoing the phrase. Each of these suggestions- grab bars, non-slip mats and more lighting-are action items that really do improve our chances of remaining independent! Getting a professional assessment of the home by a professional, trained to identify the risks, is a great next step.
Second – technology in the form of emergency alert systems, smart home devices and telehealth services. These systems can foster independence and peace of mind in case of a personal or household emergency. Many systems also allow older adults to create the environment within the home, controlling the temperature, lighting and even door locks remotely.
Third – social engagement through local clubs, volunteer activities and social events. Fostering the sense of community comes with active participation and opportunities to connect with others with common interests, learn new skills and/or try a new hobby.
Honoring older Americans this month is the staunch reminder that they are our teachers and our mentors. Having weathered many of life’s storms, older adults have gained resilience through experience and perseverance. Let us do our part to support older adults with these ideas and more!
